Step-by-Step Bar Council Enrolment Journey (With Tips & Checklist)

📚 By Law Drafters

Entering the legal profession is a proud milestone for any law graduate. But before you begin your practice, enrolling with the Bar Council is a crucial step. When I went through the process, I faced several doubts, delays, and surprises. So I decided to break it down into six clear steps to help those just starting their journey.

Whether you’re confused about documents, orientation, or the AIBE, this guide has you covered.

🔹 Step 1: Collecting the Enrolment Form

To initiate the process, I needed to collect the enrolment form from the Bar Council office. For this, either a Provisional Degree Certificate or the Final Degree Certificate issued by the university was required.

✅ Tip: Carry extra photocopies of your degree, just in case.

🔹 Step 2: Form Filling & Document Collection

This step was the most detailed and time-consuming. Here’s what the form required:

  • GPA and year-wise marksheets
  • Migration certificate
  • KYC documents (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.)
  • Proof of stay

Since I was residing in a rented flat, arranging proof of stay took extra effort. I had to submit:

  • A signed rent agreement
  • Police verification
  • Attested KYC document of the flat owner

Additionally, the enrolment form must be attested by two enrolled advocates who can vouch for your fitness to join the Bar.

✅ Tip: Connect with senior advocates early and request their attestation in advance.

🔹 Step 3: Form Submission

With all the documents and advocate attestations in place, I submitted my completed form by the end of September.

✅ Tip: Keep a soft scan of all your documents — they help if anything goes missing.

🔹 Step 4: Mandatory Bar Council Meeting

Soon after submission, I received a message regarding a mandatory orientation/induction meeting conducted by the Bar Council.

🕐 The session lasted 1–2 hours, and attendance was compulsory. It covered ethics, responsibilities, and the professional role of advocates.

✅ Tip: Attend in formal wear and carry your ID and submission receipt.

🔹 Step 5: Collection of Provisional Enrolment Certificate

After attending the meeting, I was eligible to collect my Provisional Enrolment Certificate in person from the Bar Council office.

This certificate allows you to start working under an advocate and appear in courts (subject to your state’s rules) while you prepare for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE).

🔹 Step 6: Applying for the Final Certificate (Post-AIBE)

Once you clear AIBE, you become eligible for the Certificate of Practice (CoP) — the final step in your enrolment.

🚨 Important:

Within 6 months of clearing the AIBE, you must upload your provisional certificate on the AIBE portal. This changes your status from “Pass with Undertaking” to “Pass.”

✅ Tip: Upload early to avoid unnecessary delays.

What is a Media Trial? Impact on Fair Trial in India

Discover what media trial means, how it affects the right to a fair trial in India, and why it’s becoming a growing concern in the justice system. Includes case examples and legal analysis. 📌  Introduction In an age of 24x7 news channels and viral social media coverage, the line between journalism and judicial process often blurs. One of the most controversial byproducts of this media evolution is the “media trial.” While media plays a crucial role in bringing attention to important issues and cases, it sometimes crosses the line—shaping public opinion and prejudicing ongoing legal proceedings. This not only endangers the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” but can also have serious implications for the right to a fair trial, a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. ⚖️  What is a Media Trial? A media trial refers to a situation where the media conducts its own investigation and declares a person guilty or innocent before the act...
